And while the behavior of the cops is being called into question in that incident, tonight, the Police Commissioner is commending the good police work which led to the interception of a van that was loaded with contraband goods.
The van was caught this morning near the border between Mexico and the Orange Walk District, and here's what ComPol shared with the media this morning:

Chester Williams- Commissioner of Police
"This morning sometime around 5 am our teams along the Belize Mexico border were on a checkpoint when a van came and officers tried to stop the van. The van upon seeing the officers sped off. They ended up in a pursuit. Eventually the van came to a stop near a curve and the driver was ordered out of the vehicle and upon doing so he picked up a machete and opened the door for the van. He was told to drop the machete. He did not do so and the officers fired one shot which caught him in the buttocks. He is currently in the Northern Regional Hospital undergoing treatment in a stable condition. The police and custom took possession of the van and inside the van was fully loaded with assorted contraband goods. The individual was in the company of his son. His son is also detained because his son also assaulted the police. He punched one of the police in the face causing severe swelling. So the son will be charged for assaulting the police and customs is currently taking an inventory of the items and they will deal with the issue of uncustomed goods."
