Tonight, the adult children of 39-year-old Candida Emerita Martinez are heartbroken; they lost their mother yesterday in a fatal accident on the Philip Goldson Highway.
She was northbound from San Joaquin to Ranchito Village performing one of her usual selfless acts, in this case taking a plate of food for her boss.
But Candy as she was affectionately called seems to have been in a rush and at about 1:30, once she'd gotten to miles 79 and 80 on the Philip Goldson Highway, she tried to overtake a truck that was traveling in the same direction.
Martinez allegedly drifted too close to the left rear wheel of the truck, which caused her to lose control of the SUV and to be violently flung out of the vehicle and onto the shoulder of the highway. She died on the scene. When she died, the food she was delivering was still warm in the car.
Our colleagues at CTV3 spoke to Candy's daughter this afternoon, flanked by her siblings, she told us that what hurts her is that her mother didn't even get to buy her only grandson his first easter basket:
Candy's passenger Byron Alarcon also received various degrees of injuries. He was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital for treatment.
