And once the crime scene examination had concluded, the Commissioner provided a detailed brief on the double murder that he says began as a burglary.
He also suggested that the assailant may have been someone that the couple knew.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"The bodies have since been transported to the medical lab on the boom road where a postmortem will be conducted."
Jules Vasquez:
"Sir, who would do such a thing?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Well I wish I would know, if you know would you care to tell me but we do have a number of persons that we are looking at and the police is surely going to conduct an intense investigation with a view to ascertain who is responsible with a view to bringing him or those persons to justice."
Jules Vasquez:
"We are told their home was ransacked, is there a robbery element?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Well, it is consistent with a burglary, yes. We don't have anything to suggest that either of those persons is involved in any criminal activities and like I said the motive at this time seems to be a burglary."
Jules Vasquez:
"We know that we've heard anecdotally from neighbors that there had been a dispute at the home on Friday night over something with a neighbor and maybe music playing too loud and the police were called to that area, are you aware of that?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Yes, the police are looking into that. That is a part of our investigation process."
Jules Vasquez:
"Now, sir I know this crime merits special attention because it is outside the frame of gang violence that has been so much in Belize City news recently, how concerned are you all if it is, if you know the people's home it's very well secured and it has a very high gate, how concerning is it that from all indications a law-abiding couple could have faced something like this and such a hideous end?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Well it is concerning Jules, every murder or any loss of life is concerning for us and it goes back to what we have always said, the whole issue of security is one that the police can do alone and as individual citizens, we too must do what we can to ensure our own personal safety from what it seemed the fact that you have said that the home seemed to be well secured. It could have also been that this was committed by someone who the couple knew and that person may have been allowed entry, so these are things that we look at during the investigation to ascertain who is responsible."
The commissioner wouldn't delve into specifics but he says that police are looking at several angles which they believe will lead them to the persons responsible.
