And from that brazen shooting of a lawman, we report now on accidents in Southern Belize that have resulted in 2 fatalities.

The first one happened on Friday night. At around 11:40 p.m., police responded to reports of an accident at around mile 21 on the Hummingbird Highway. When they arrived, they found an Isuzu D-Max pickup that had plunged off the road into an orchard. Inside, 37-year-old Marlon Moran, a resident of Belmopan, was trapped in the vehicle dead.

Initial reports are that he was heading from Belmopan to Dangriga when he lost control of the vehicle and it flipped several times.

Here's what the police had to say about the accident at today's briefing:

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood - Director of Communications, ComPol's Office
"On the 26th of June also, [at] 11:40 p.m., police arrived at an area around mile 21 on the Hummingbird Highway, where they found him trapped in his Isuzu pickup truck, in an orchard. Investigations have so far revealed that he was driving at an excessive speed when he lost control of his vehicle, overturned in that orchard, and unfortunately lost his life."

"We have seen a rise in these sorts of accidents, especially the Hummingbird Highway, and now the Southern Highway. I believe the road condition has been improved, and people are taking advantage of it. Unfortunately, if you want to speed, you should try to do that at a race track because driving without due care and attention very serious, and we have seen where a lot of people have become victims because of this type of behavior in driving. I'm saying, in particular, the Moran incident, but we have seen over the past month or so that there are quite many accidents between Belmopan, all the way down to Toledo. So, we want to ask drivers, while you're out there, let's be responsible."
