And, turning now to crime news, a killer stalked 24-year-old Daniel Lopez while he was walking home from the police station last night. He'd just been released after 48-hour detention and was heading home warily, knowing that there was a target on his back.
And he was so close to home when his shooter got him that his mother Anisha would have heard the shot from her bedroom.
She spoke to Cherisse Halsall this morning telling the tragic tale of Lopez's last hours and his ill-fated walk home.
Daniel Lopez was a man under an active threat - and he was shot minutes after reign released from police custody:
Anisha Lopez, Mother of the decease
"When I found out was when my sister ran home to tell me and I was in my bed waiting on my son like what I told you mammy, I was waiting on my son for 9:00 o'clock to go and pick up my son from the station, because the police tell me when I reach there at 11am with the food my son was getting let go at 9am and I told him if he was sure, because I wanted to be there on point to deal with my son."

"I was going to pick up my son and if my son had gotten a call he would have called his auntie straight and she would have gone to pick him up in her taxi because she and her husband always pick up my son if they go to work they are the ones that pick up her and it's two of them not one of them because I don't allow them to walk that boulevard."
An abiding fear realized with Daniel just steps away from home.
Cherisse Halsall:
"You really feel that the police let you down?"
Anisha Lopez, Mother of the decease
"They let me down big time mammy, the police let me down big time, they could have given my son a call so that at least my son could call his auntie so that his aunt could pick him up because she usually picks him up everyday, everyday, every day she picks him up."
It's a heart-wrenching lament from a mother who could hardly have done anything more. She told us that the family had been waiting by the fence to give Daniel a birthday cake that he'll never get to enjoy.
Anisha Lopez, Mother of the decease
"My son had just turned 24, my son was just trying to get his life together they wanted to build their little house and get their things together. I was just telling my son why doesn't he come back home, he still has his room, he can go and come anytime, but he has a girl that he goes to. That is life with young men today days."
Cherisse Halsall:
"Your sister told us that she always tells him that's it not a good thing to have friends. Do you feel that he may have been killed by someone he knew?"
Anisha Lopez, Mother of the decease
"Yes ma'am and I understand that's off of an old time beef, I don't really know because I don't talk to my son about no gang bang nothing and then I try tell them no try get into that world there. That is the right way I try to raise them/ When they left from here, I don't know what they go do out there with their company."
And it's between that company and the reality of Belize City's streets that Lopez's fate was sealed.
Cherisse Halsall:
"How does it strike you that a lot of these young men have to be afraid to walk the streets?"
Anisha Lopez, Mother of the decease
"For real, God, he has to do something about it because it's getting too drastic and it's close to your home, it's close to your house, it's not like it's anywhere far. I feel it how a lot of mothers go on TV and feel and the police are not doing their jobs, as they hear a shooting, they are just picking up people. Find the correct people. If he was on the street and they pick up him, I could understand that, but they didn't pick him up off the street, you guys came to pick him up way out of his house, handcuffed him and took him."
Anisha Lopez, Mother of the decease
"I, made sure that I called my son to make my son come and face the police them, because I don't tolerate stupidness and I make sure the police wait right here and my son come to them and then he gets in the vehicle and went with them and they brought him back. The same way the next police could have done the same thing, because the man gave my son his word that he will make sure he reaches back home safe."
And while the officer may have made that promise he couldn't have known how fate and circumstance would intervene, stopping Daniel Lopez dead in his tracks at just a stone's throw from home.
