
A man convicted of killing a gang leader has been sentenced to life in prison. Justice Antoinette Moore handed down the sentence to Nicholas Swaso this morning in the Southern District Session of the Supreme Court.
Swazo was convicted of killing Gerald Shiny Tillett in 2016 at the Wadani Shed in Dangriga. Tillett was reputed to be the leader of the George Street Gang. On the night of April 16, 2016, Tillett was playing dice along with some friends when he was shot in the head. Swazo was shot in the back by another man as he was fleeing the scene.
Despite that, In the trial, Swazo said he was not the shooter and that he was was never around the area.
Prosecutor for the DPP's office was Javier Chan who called 13 witnesses.
Swazo was first convicted in a trial without Jury in May of 2021, and today in handing down the life sentence, Justice Antoinette Moore ruled that he must serve 30 years in jail before he is eligible for parole.
Five years after the 2016 murder of Shiney Tillett, his teenaged son, Gerald Junior was murdered in Belize City.
