Tonight, a messenger from the National Sports Council is lucky to be alive after being ambushed on his motorbike and escaping on foot from a gunman.

It happened this morning just moments after Meighan left his office, and headed out on some errands.

Cherisse Halsall has the story:

This morning at 10:00 am, 33 year old messenger, Micheal Meighan left the spots council's office at the Marion Jones facility on this motorcycle and a pair of robbers were waiting to ambush him at the
Saint Thomas Street roundabout.

We got the re-cap from his boss Sports Council Director Ian Cal:

Ian Cal - Director, National Sports Council
"From what I understand he went to the office to pick up some checks that he needed to take to sign to the chairman and the treasurer because they are the ones who usually sign some checks for us and to take other documents that he needs to take around the city. Right after he left the office we got informed that he got shot by Princess Margaret driving near to BTL so um the guys from the office security rushed to the area and I was told that he did suffer a gunshot wound to the leg but he managed to run to the section of BTL. I cannot say if it was a robbery or if it was an attempt on his life I cannot say but I guess the police are doing their investigation."

Reports say that Meighan's assailants crashed into him on their motorbike, flinging him to the pavement.

He somehow figured this was no accident, and dashed towards the nearest safe place, which was BTL on Saint Thomas Street.

That's when one of the robbers fired multiple shots and one of them hit Meighan in the leg. He ran into the BTL compound for safety.

Our team arrived before the scenes of crime and the police on the scene used an almond as a temporary bullett marker.

But was it a robbery? We asked the sports council director what he thinks.

Ian Cal
"We don't carry or manage much cash at the national sports council. It's minimal, people who go and pay to use the facility and whenever they want to pay for an advertising spot in one of our facilities. So it's really minimal so I would find it hard that it would be a robbery, maybe they thought he is carrying a lot of money but they rarely do any big deposits at the national sports council. I think that I have to revisit the way we do things. The messenger is always busy and is always all around the city doing errands for us so we do have different ways in which we move, our vehicles and our cycle. So, we just need to revisit how we do things from now on."

And for now, while messenger Meighan was treated and released, his assailants are still on the run, but apparently, they're running without the slippers they left at the scene.

Both of Meighan's assailants escaped on their motorcycle.
