Last Wednesday, we told you about the 2-year-old baby who had to be rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital because she ingested a deadly pesticide.
She has been identified as 2-year-old Melanie Santos, who picked up and ate a piece of bread that her father soaked in a deadly pesticide called lannate. He was reportedly trying to set a bait to poison rats, but the baby didn't know any better and took a bite.
She was rushed to the hospital, and somehow survived the poisoning.
The press asked if the police would bring criminal charges for the apparent neglect. Here's what the Commissioner had to say:
Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police
"Obviously, from what we have seen and heard, it seemingly is a genuine mistake on the part of the father or can be looked at as a matter of negligence. I am sure that as a family, they have suffered enough, having to see their child going through what the child went through as a result of what had happened. And, we really have to put a bit of humanity in how we approach the situation. I certainly would not want to see the parents having to go through another situation with this. It certainly is going to be hard on them. But what we are doing is putting the file together and then we're going to send it to the DPP's office for guidance in terms of where we go. It is not a matter for us to decide. Again, it's a complex issue, and where we have complex issues, we would normally defer to the DPP for guidance. So, that's what we are going to do in this case."
