And also in the north, A man was shot by police last night after resisting arrest.

It happened in the village of Guinea Grass after a neighbour reported a violent incident to the police.

When the cops arrived on the scene they found a 37-year-old in the act of assaulting his ex-common law wife while threatening her with a hammer.

And when police tried to intervene they also found themselves threatened. Tonight, we jump back into this disturbing story through the description of a neighbor. She told CTV3 reporters that the cops had the suspect kneel and throw away the hammer. They commanded him to calm down before things got worse. Here's what happened next.

Shanti Bul, Neighbor
"He had the hammer and the police told him to let go of the hammer and to throw it far from them so that he couldn't hit them with the same hammer. After that he came out of the compound and they put him in handcuffs at the same time so that he couldn't hit the man or the woman. So, after him coming out and being put in handcuffs then the police grabbed him and took him to the station saying that they would have taken him to the hospital and I don't know, what else, so much else."

Reporter
"Did they shoot the guy?"

Shanti Bul, Neighbor
"They shot him because he wanted to hit both of them with the same hammer."

Reporter
"Where did they shoot him?"

Shanti Bul, Neighbor
"In his knee."

Because it is a sexual assault - we have not released the name of the suspect to protect the victim.
