And turning now to another burglary, one that Commissioner Chester Williams has gone on the record to say he's not sure it actually took place, we're looking back at the Maya Mopan robbery of the elderly Martinez brothers. They claim a group of 5 barged into their home and stole 250 grand in cash.
This case, much like the Ramnarce murder, which happened nearby, is a crime that is believed to was allegedly committed by police officers. But today when we put that question to ASP Yearwood he cautioned the public that making false allegations against police officers is a criminal offence.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
"I know that the professional standards branch has launched an investigation into that allegation and I want to advise the public that in the event that these allegations are found to be untrue or of mischief these persons that made those allegations against the police officers will face criminal charges because a lot of people make allegations against officers for various reasons sometimes only out of spite. We at the police department have to take each one seriously and we have our investigators do their part when these officers are found guilty I am certain that you here, the general public hear that we charge our officers on a daily basis and the commissioner of police has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to allegations made against the police and if these police officers are guilty of the crimes that they are alleged to be committing and if we charge them when they are found guilty of it then we must charge you also when you make a false report against our officers."
