And that strategy has included more effective deterrents for drug planes. It's been about 7 months since the last landing, which occurred in Crique Sarco, but that doesn't mean the narcos have suddenly stopped trafficking drugs. In fact, the minister said they get alerts almost every night of low flying aircraft circling Belize, but for one reason or the other, they aren't landing here. Musa explained what he believes is deterring them.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs

"Just this week, and if I were to give an interview anytime a plane comes into our region, it would be every single day. every night our police officers, our operations team, receives intelligence, information that illicit aircrafts have left South America coming to our region we spread out all across this country to the known points, we have a good radar system, we do have joint cooperation with other countries in the region who provide us with intelligence and information and that I would say is the number 1 reasons that we've been able to deter those aircrafts from landing in Belize. Right now it seems that the preferred landing spot for them is in Guatemala, I believe one landed there last week but was caught, apprehended, and I believe one may have landed if not last night, the night before and so we see a general trend whereby yes they're coming into our region but they're going across Belize and landing in Guatemala."
