Yesterday, you heard the Commissioner of Police tidily explain how his SPU Commander, ASP Aaron Gamboa might have ended up with a two thousand dollar electronic transfer sent to him from a gun dealer.

The compol said it could have just been that Gamboa sold the gun dealer a thousand US dollars, and got the Belizean currency back in a bank transfer - which he says is not at all suspicious.

But, is it legal? You might not know it - and all of us do it - but according to Central Bank regulations - only licensed banks should deal with exchanging money.

That's why buying US dollars from your friends and associates is called buying it on the black market.

So, is the compol - as the country's top lawman - legitimizing black market currency exchanges? That's problematic - and we asked the Minister about it today:

Kareem Musa, Area Rep, Caribbean Shores
"I haven't heard or seen that interview I don't know what the commissioner said so I will have to take your word from it, your word of it but indeed whenever you change US dollars while many Belizeans may say that's common place it does constitute some sort of black market transaction so to speak if that's what you're asking."
