And it's surely something we will bring up with the commissioner of police tomorrow when we see him at another event.

To be sure, he's Belize's top cop and one of the most recognizable faces in the country, and today, Chester Williams celebrates five years as Commissioner of Police.

And over those five years, you've seen him at press conferences, briefings, and even impromptu interviews, never shying away from the camera, despite his criticisms of the media, and the back-and-forth arguments with journalists.

And this year was his most impressive, with the lowest murder count in over a decade.

But this achievement didn't come easily, or without controversy. Courtney Menzies has a brief look at his time in office. Here is that story.

On January 9th, 2019, Chester Williams ascended to Commissioner of Police, succeeding the former ComPol, Allen Whylie, who held the position for 5 years and 7 months. But from the very first day of being the top cop, Williams was baptized by controversy.

Allen Whylie, ComPol
"I can say without a doubt, to those persons who were apart of the campaign to get me replaced or fired, that you have not broken me."

"Those who have wronged me, know who they are. I want to let them know that I have forgiven then because I am first and foremost a spiritual person. To those officers who are gloating or prancing or crowing and gleeful as if they have won the super bowl or the lotto, I say to you do not be because unlike you, my book is already written."

And it was no secret the one of the cops Whylie alluded to was his own Deputy Commissioner, who would take over immediately as head of the department.

And in the five years that Williams has been ComPol he has been lauded as the most public, most accessible, and most open commissioner. But - he's also been the most controversial, most confrontational, and the most combative.

Chester Williams, ComPol
"I am Commissioner of Police, I am not any common obscenity out there, so get your act together."

Chester Williams, ComPol
"Whether you know or you don't know Jules, you are going to say that because you strive on negativity, okay that's what you feed on."

Jules Vasquez:
"Sir I strive on facts, you to tell me how you feel, I don't feel the man do this..."

Chester Williams, ComPol
"If negativity were to be done with tomorrow, you would be dead."

Chester Williams, ComPol
"You you constantly listen to those wannabe commissioners in the department who consistently feed you with a bunch of nonsense and you take these rubbish that you have been fed and digest them. It is not doing you well."

Chester Williams, ComPol

"I really and I truly will adapt what my good mother told me, not to tell cow good morning."

But "Clyde The Glide" as Kareem Musa calls him, has survived two ministers and a major controversy surrounding the issuance of gun licenses.

And despite all that, he almost never turns down the opportunity to perform before the scrum of cameras.

Today, he reflected on his tenure with a Facebook post that said, quote, "I must say it has been a bittersweet moment. Serving the country is my passion and I thank God everyday for giving me the strength, courage, patience, and knowledge to discharge my duties in the most professional way even under difficult circumstances." End quote.
