Yesterday evening, a fire broke out inside a store on New Road. Fortunately, the blaze did not leave the room it started in, and most of the store and the upstairs of the building was spared. But what could have caused it? Courtney Menzies spoke with the shopkeeper and has this story.

For residents in the neighborhood of Pitts Alley and New Road, Diamond Grocery and Laundromat is their corner store. But yesterday a small fire broke out at the business, which could have been a disaster for the shop owner, who also lives there. But today he told us that only his bedroom suffered major damage.

Foyjuy Tufaiel, Fire Victim

"I came back yesterday evening from Chetumal, then I went to my brother's house, then my neighbor called me and said [the shop] was burning and to come, so I came and I see everything burnt."

Courtney Menzies:
"What all did you lose?"

Foyjuy Tufaiel, Fire Victim
"I lost my bedroom, the condition is too bad, and a lot of documents."

Courtney Menzies:
"And what did the fire personnel tell you?"

Foyjuy Tufaiel, Fire Victim
"The fire personnel told me maybe it was an electric fire or something, I'm not sure, they are investigating, so I'm not sure what was the problem."

Courtney Menzies:
"Where are you staying right now."

Foyjuy Tufaiel, Fire Victim
"In my brother's room."

Tufaiel said he did not leave anything burning, and only a phone charger had been left plugged in.
