The Association of Protected Areas Management Organizations (is reporting an encounter between rangers at the Elijio Panti National Park and illegal hunters, one identified as a Guatemalan citizen, hunting deep within the boundaries of the national park.
On the night of January 4th during a routine patrol within the Elijio Panti National Park, Rangers came across three Hispanic men, one of whom was identified as a Guatemalan and well-known hunter residing in San Antonio Village. The rangers tracked them and attempted to intercept them on the main road; but, they abandoned their possessions and ran back into the forest. Upon inspection of the discarded items, a sack containing deer meat and a gibnut, along with 12-gauge and 16-gauge shotguns, was recovered.
The general public is reminded that according to the National Protected Areas System Act Section 39, "No person shall, within any national park, nature reserve, wildlife sanctuary or natural monument, except with the written authorization of the Chief Forest Officer, (c) hunt any species of wildlife; (i) carry firearms, spears, traps or other means for hunting or fishing."
