He was caught on camera brandishing a licensed.223 rifle in front of the church at his grandmother's funeral - and today the chief magistrate told Brandon Gillett he could face up to a year in prison for making alteration to that weapon.

Gillett and his attorney asked for a sentencing indication if he were to plead guilty - as he indicated to the Chief Magistrate he would consider doing.

The Chief told Gillett that by law the minimum sentence is 5 years, however, she can use her discretion and impose a lesser prison time for someone - like him - with no previous convictions. She said in his case she could sentence him to one year.

Upon hearing that, Gillett told the court he will go to trial.

His case was further adjourned for April 30, 2024 where he is expected to be provided with disclosure in the matter and a date for trial will then be agreed upon.

His charges relate to altering the firearm he had a license to carry. He altered it with a flashlight, Pistol Grip, Fore Grip, Front Sight and a Rear Sight.

Gillett had initially pleaded guilty when he was first arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate's Court but because he was not in agreement with the facts, an equivocal plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf by the sitting Magistrate.
