The mitigation hearing in the Oscar Selgado trial continued today today with character witnesses appearing in court to speak on behalf of the convicted attorney.

Also appearing was prison CEO Virgilio Murillo and the prison Doctor Javier Novelo. They spoke about managing his diabetic condition in the prison.

When we spoke to Selgado's attorney Arthur Saldivar he maintained that neither the CEO or the Dr could lobby on behalf of the services the prison provides to diabetic patients, given that neither of them are patients themselves under the prison's care.

Arthur Saldivar, Attorney
"When the doctor tells you he does not get the ability to taste the diabetic food himself and the man responsible for the prison also tells you that he doesn't eat prison food. One cannot be confident in the quality of food, one that inmates with diabetic condition received at the prison. And when you get to appreciate that of the total complement of medical staff of 14, there are only six civilian staff with no nurses and 8 inmates who are unpaid, with one doctor for a population of more than 1250."

"A ratio of more than 90 inmates to one medical personnel, so-called, with limited training. Most of them no, man. It's a travesty. The prison official brought a list of 12 persons who are the persons afflicted with diabetes. But we know of two persons that have died who have also suffered diabetes. That is a high percentage in terms of death rate of persons with diabetes."

"When you really calculate that number. So one cannot be confident that a person in Mr. Salgado's condition could really survive Both Abadi and Cowe died within a year and when it's been admitted that there's only one doctor and that doctor is not there all the time. It really gives pause to any right thinking person. Better must be done."
