While the raging forest fires down south are threatening the animals and birds on land. The high temperatures and heat waves are also killing the fish in the rivers. A fish kill was reported in the New River earlier this week, and DOE stepped in to determine the cause. Here's what they found out.

Mairon Munoz, Environmental Technician
"So for the most part on our readings where readings are not that uh, bad as in the past and based on our statistics of the aerial mages, I saw some burn sites directly, you know, close on the banks of the river banks. And so that could have caused some increase in the temperature. And, you know, the smoke, you know, hovering over the river and reducing the dissolved oxygen in the water."
"So for the most part, that that's what we can see for the moment. But previously, yes, we have we've accepted some complaints, received some complaints about Fishkill in certain parts and similar and similarly, it results from the intense fire, forest fire on fire that have been set intentionally. And so I believe the worse case scenario have already passed."
"And so for the moment, you know, we're just trying to see some certain hot points across the country."
Resident's are advised to refrain from swimming in the river and to minimize it's usage until an all clear is given by the department.
