Tonight we note the passing of Gorge Gabb. The 79 year old was truly Belize's gifted giant having made a name for himself first as a boat builder and later as an artist, sculptor, and musician. Gabb passed at 11:40 pm last night at the Medical Associates Hospital, one day after he turned 79.
His son Tony told us this evening that his father was admitted into Medical Associates on Thursday morning because he was suffering food poisoning. He was diagnosed with typhoid fever as a result of that food poisoning and he was admitted. He died from cardiac arrest.
For the last five years, Gabb has battled arthritis, glaucoma, hypertension and diabetes.
Gabb will probably best be remembered for the sculpture he did called the "Sleeping Giant" which is the watermark on Belize's currency and on the passport. At a tribute in 2005, he was dubbed "G.O.A.T" - the greatest of all time. As time permits next week, we'll look back at the work and always profound musings of one of Belize's most gifted, enduring and compelling artists.
George Gabb is survived by his wife Sarita Gabb and six children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
