The Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation Program, COMPACT was established in 2001. Those who follow this newscast would have seen some of the work that COMPACT does especially with coastal communities as they try to minimize the impact they have on the reef system. Now the program is entering into a second phase and today it held consultations with its stakeholders to see what direction the program will take. Director of COMPACT Omar Gale explains.

Omar Gale,
"This stakeholders workshop provides an opportunity for all the stakeholders who are here today to provide their comments, inputs, and feedback on the development of new strategy which will actually guide the implementation of the program for the rest of phase two. We need to get the feedback and input from the stakeholders on how this program will be run. The program has made significant strides in terms of engaging stakeholders in sustainable livelihoods, sustainable fishing techniques, co-management capacity, building of other capacities with these community groups that we work with."

The program will run for another two years after which its viability will be evaluated.
