Help continues to trickle in for the victims of last month's fire on Prince Street. 5 families were left homeless and this afternoon they got an opportunity to win a new three-piece sofa set. We say "win" because the Adventura Furniture Company from Corozal donated one sofa set and it was the City Council's job to choose which family would get it. Deputy Mayor Anthony Michael says in the spirit of transparency - they chose to raffle it. The draw took place this afternoon at City Hall.

Anthony Michael, Deputy Mayor
"Adventura Furniture from Corozal saw it in their heart when they saw that donation and they got in contact with the Belize City Council and said they were prepared to give a donation of a three piece sofa set to the fire victims and they asked us to pick a family. Out of transparency, the Belize City Council met and decided that the best way to do this is by raffling the five names because all five families lost everything and we are happy to say that it went well. The five families understood that we had to do it that way for transparency and the winner is Gilroy 'Press' Cadogan."

Marilyn Cadogan, Fire Victim/Won Raffle
"I feel excited, only because I don't need it. I am going to donate it to one of the other families because none of them have any and mines didn't get burnt so the task now is which one. So I guess I will have to do a raffle myself and find one of the other families who really needs it because I saved mines thank God."

Yes, you heard right, Marilyn Cadogan says she doesn't need the sofa set and so she will donate to another family. She will hold a similar raffle among the four other families. And Marilyn Cadogan wasn't the only one to leave City Hall with a gift today.
