This afternoon football legend Bernard "Dubu" Thomas was given a new weed cutter. Thomas who is the caretaker of Berger Field on Raccoon Street asked the City Council for the weed cutter. Deputy Mayor Michael told us why the council helped Thomas.
Anthony Michael, Deputy Mayor
"We have donated along with Belize Waste Control a brand new weed cutter to Bernard Thomas who has spent a lot of his years, over the last 16 years, cleaning the football field where he lives, going around and asking for football donations to take off the youths off the streets of Belize City. He came at our public meeting, and did not ask for financial assistance. He asked if we could give him a weed cutter so he could continue cleaning the field so the youths could play football, and he can go around and earn an honest living. That is admirable and when we saw things like that, we decided to come out and help."
Bernard "Dubu" Thomas, Recipient
"I came to the council one month ago and asked if they could assist and this is what they gave me. I appreciate it a lot and I still want more assistance because I need gas and lube. I don't have a salary but I appreciate this a lot."
