Each year, as school closes, and summer starts, kids all over the country are let out for two whole months, and parents must face the question of what to do to keep them busy. For the past four years the family of Eder Alamilla, has run an art camp in his name, and are expected to do so again this year. We learned more when we spoke with Alamilla’s nephew, Ian O’Keefe.

“The purpose of the art camp is to get the kids off the street, schools closed, and we want them to come and express themselves through art and have them do something. We aim for the underprivileged kids; get them off the streets, they don’t have anything to do at home, they are going to end up in trouble. We have them come, we give them a snack, and we teach them a little about art.

We make them feel special. I find it important to keep my uncle’s memory alive because he was a big role model to me and he showed me you can express yourself through different things and art was one of his.”

The camp runs from July 27th to August 7th at the Lion’s Den on Princess Margaret Drive. Children ages 5-10 are in the morning class which is from 9:30 to 11 am, and kids from 11-15 are from 1 – 2 p.m. The cost is one dollar a day.
