If you're in the Toledo District, and you find yourself near the Mayan Village of Santa Cruz, there are a group of village handicraft women who specialize in ornate hand-sewn art.

They call themselves the Hibiscus Maya Art and Craft Cooperative, and these women use their artisanal talents to earn money for their families.

Recently, Freelance Journalist Jose Sanchez visited the artisan group, and found out about their empowerment efforts. Here's an excerpt from his story:

If you pass by Santa Cruz, and you're interested in purchasing any of their creations, you can reach the cooperative at the telephone number, 601-4838.
