There are 14 archeological sites across the country of Belize and not only do they contribute greatly to tourism, but also to culture and history. That's why today is observed as International Archeology Day. At the ceremony today, there were displays of claypots, and even a chance for children to make their own, and a game of Pok Ta Pok.

And the Unesco Secretariat General on the National Commission of Belize and NICH Board Member, Arreini Palacio, thanked the Institute of Archeology for all they do to keep our history alive.

"This is the team that through sleepless nights and challenging days with passion, vision and countless times with shared and limited patience, have successfully managed. fourteen archeological reserves and other sites across the country. Some of our most iconic tourist attractions and fascinating historical monuments of a civilization centuries old. Tackling everything from constantly meeting and many times surpassing visitor expectations. Mitigating increasing impacts of climate change, to even fending off thieves and illegal immigration across our borders through our sites, this is no easy feat. today is the day when we get the time off to implement one of the key responsibilities of archeology, education, and outreach. We get the opportunity to speak to archeologists and rangers who continuously brave the elements to manage our assets by preserving and protecting Belize's precious cultural resources. We have the opportunity to understand the science and the thrill of management. Celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of our ancestors who left behind the remains of fascinating cities across our country's landscape. International Archeology Day is an opportunity to showcase what we have learnt about the past through several information boots, highlighting a multitude of approaches in conducting archeological research that help us better understand our past."
