Earlier in the news, we took you to the Sapodilla Cayes for a look at the blue waters and white sandy beaches of the islets being claimed by Honduras.
That's a long-standing claim enshrined in that country's constitution since 1982. It's an issue that Belizeans have either been ignorant to or they've ignored altogether. But after our trip there we wondered if widespread indifference towards the Cayes, and who gets to own them is caused by a total lack of familiarity with the range - because, after all, how many Belizeans really get to go there? It is 36 miles from Punta Gorda Town - that's a two hour boat ride!
And so we took to the streets, not in the City but in that southernmost town to ask the people if they'd ever been to the Sapodillas or know anything about them at all. Here's what they said:
Honduras's position is that the Sapodillas are part of the Bay Islands, but the language of the 1859 treaty with Guatemala "implied that Guatemala considered the Sapodilla Cays, although not mentioned by name, as part and parcel of'British Honduras.'"
