Yesterday was Emancipation Day - but many Belizeans used it to escape to Chetumal. Fresh off payday, thousands of Belizeans flocked to Chet. Facebook posters showed long lines leading up to the border in the morning, and by nighttime - those returning had to wait almost two hours to get processed through immigration. The line extended for miles, all the way to the Chactemal Bridge.

According to the Ministry of Immigration, on Thursday 3891 persons went across to Mexico and 3507 persons entered Belize.

This is about a thousand more travelers than a heavy Saturday and much more than an average weekday.
