And at the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting, the closing communique made a statement supporting Belize's position in the ongoing territorial dispute with Guatemala. They expressed concern over the, quote "continued illegal activities by Guatemalan nationals in Belizean territory along the Belize - Guatemala border." And they also called on the Guatemalan Government to dissuade its nationals from entering Belizean territory.

Today we asked the Minister about this statement.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"As always at these CARICOM heads of government meetings we use the opportunity to brief our CARICOM brothers and sister on the current events between Guatemala and Belize so we gave them an update, a status report on where we are and of course as always they pledged their full, unwavering commitment and support to Belize's position. They recognize, as we do, our challenges at the border and so they wanted to put on record a call for Guatemala to respect the sovereignty of Belize and to make sure we are dialoging on these issues on the ground in terms of coming across our border, deforestation and so many other issues that we face on a daily basis along the border point. As usual we appreciate fully the support of our CARICOM members."
