It is summertime and many children are enjoying their break from the classroom and text books by playing video games and watching television. The last place you would expect to find school children on their holiday is the library but that’s exactly where 7NEWS found some boys and girls. Today was the last day of a week long programme where the participants from as young as two years old to five years old have been learning about things that are of great interest to Belize. The presentations are creatively done so children are gaining knowledge while being motivated to read.
Raymond Bradley, Senior Library Assistant
“Each year the library has a summer program and we gear it towards something happening in Belize so this year we have chosen the oil industry. So after leaving they will learn everything about the oil industry in Belize, the history – like when oil was found and so forth.
What we did for the younger kids is we have mostly show them pictures and we relate it to the oil. For the older kids we had sessions where we read to them about the oil industry from brochures and pamphlets that we received from BNE and also next week we will be having another program which we call interactive reading where we will be teaching the children about the library and they will learn to make a book, they will learn how to use the library, they will know about membership and everything about the library.”
Senior library assistant Raymond Bradley says over thirty five children between the ages of two and thirteen years old attended the first programme. An equal amount is expected next week for the interactive reading programme. Over all Bradley says they are encouraged by the increase in membership that they have seen at the Leo Bradley Library.
