And the youth minister also weighed in on the copious amounts of homework students get. In a recent speech by Dr Zabaneh, he suggested only 30 minutes of homework for primary school students and 60 minutes for high school students. Kevin Bernard agreed, saying that he's seen his own child having to deal with online classes as well as hours of homework.
Hon. Kevin Bernard, Minister of Youth
"I look at my daughter, they're doing alone courses but the amount of homework that they issue these young people that sometimes its burdensome, we expect them to do everything but what we should do is to ensure that they're capturing the material that is to be imparted to them and that is critical so I believe if the minister of state is saying this then there must be a valid reason why they are saying it. I know they are looking at the entire curriculum in schools right now to see how they could strengthen it and also to get rid of some of those areas that we feel are not having a direct impact on young people. Belizean young people need to know math, they need to know sciences, they need to ensure that the field of work they want to study or work in, that is the discipline that they need to focus on so I don't want to comment more on that because at the end of the day, I don't know the details he is saying but I will say if it is something I believe will benefit the Belizean people and the student, I will definitely support."
