But while some teachers are waiting to see the National Curriculum Framework, others may be contemplating job opportunities abroad.

It's a challenging reality that, even the Minister had to admit, is plaguing schools across the region. We asked him what his ministry can do to curb it. Here's how he answered that:

Cherisse Halsall:
"Developed countries are seeking professionals right now, they are seeking nurses but they are also seeking teachers, what is it that the Ministry is doing to help retain a lot of the trained talent here in the country?"

Francis Fonseca, Minister Of Education
"You're right, it is a serious issue facing obviously facing not only Belize but they are targeting Caribbean teachers in particular because of the fact that we are English speaking and so we can more effectively transition into north American, the north American education system. So it is a challenge. You know we have to accept that we can't compete with these schools. We can't compete with the salaries that their offering. It's affected how this has absolutely negatively impacted a country like Jamaica. They are facing a severe crisis. So, you. know all we can do is as we have been saying, continue to engage with our teachers, continue to engage with our educated community, make sure that we are working together to address concerns and issues as they arise."

"By and large people do not want to move, they do not want to leave their homes, and they do not want to leave their families. Sometimes the packages become so attractive that it becomes difficult for them to resist but we certainly, the most important thing is being aware of the issue and having a plan in place really to try to engage and dialogue on a consistent basis to ensure that we are listening to our teachers and providing them with opportunities for them to develop and grow here in Belize. The truth is that in terms of direct competition there is very little that we can do if your only motivation is an increased salary."

An article from the Washington post earlier in the month says quote: "The teacher shortage in America has hit crisis levels - and school officials everywhere are scrambling to ensure that, as students return to classrooms, someone will be there to educate them." End quote.
