And Kolbe C.E.O, Murillo says that his foundation has thought long and hard about how to make success at a second chance even more likely. The trouble is that like most initiatives, this one will need quite a bit of funding to get off the ground.
Here's what he told us today about a project that could be considered Kolbe phase 2 in its ability to ensure a smoother transition back to society for former offenders.
Virgillio Murillo, C.E.O, Kolbe Foundation

"That has always been a challenge for us because we do not have any halfway houses that we control in the society, the Kolbe foundation board of directors has always discussed the idea of creating a Kolbeville where we would have tried and duplicate what we have at the prison. we have all these programs going on whether they are schools educational, vocational, you see where we produce chickens, we do farming, pigry, and it has always been a hope for the Kolbe foundation board of directors, to try and replicate that program but that comes with it's challenges because you need land, you need housing, you need all to these things and it requires a lot of financial resources to say the least but it is something that we are still discussing as a Kolbe foundation board of directors and organization and it's just a matter of trying to get he buy in from the politicians or the government if you want to put it that way and maybe other NGO's and business people. Showing them that we can turn people's lives around and we can play a part in keeping people away from crime by keeping them or making them engaged positively and making them productive citizens of society. I know a few countries New Zealand and Finland and all of these places have that kind of set-up where the ex-offender gets to transition smoothly and they get that support from the government at least until they have levelled off and they are in the position to live what you call self-sustainable lives before they are full, they fully let go their hands."
