Brace for blackouts! That's the word from BEL this afternoon as Mexico's Commision Federal de Electricidad has been forced to ration the power it provides to BEL.
BEL doesn't have enough water in Mollejon to compensate, and so rolling blackouts started this afternoon. First to be hit was Dangriga and San Ignacio which had blackout from 3:30 to 5:30. Next in line was Orange Walk and Corozal which have had blackout from 5:30 p.m.
BEL warns that additional outages may be necessary this weekend, but notices will go out in the media before the utility pulls the plug. The situation should be resolved by Sunday evening when Mexico's CFE returns to full power after maintenance work at its Xul-ha substation is finished.
