Last night you saw the impressive work being done on the Belize City canals to turn them into an efficient drainage waterway.
It's an IDB initiative known as the Climate Vulnerability Reduction Project, but the city council says it hasn't done enough to address the build-up of silt at the mouth of the Haulover Creek.
But, the project engineer said that they did dredge 130 metres of the canal between the Conch Shell Bay Fish Market and the Haulover Creek:

Victor Menjivar - Site Inspector, CVRP "When the project commenced we had an estimated value of material that was to be dredged but due to proper recording we saw a huge saving, we even opted to invest to dredge that area to facilitate the fishermen to dock their boats in that location, so we did about 130 meters from the fish market into the mouth of Haulover Creek to a depth of approximately 1.2 meters."
Jules Vasquez "How will that help the fisher folk?"
Victor Menjivar "The fishermen will now be able to drive their boats straight into sea, straight into that area that they couldn't do before but the bottom line is the fishermen can now safely bring in their boats because the area has been dredged."
The city Council is asking for the area by the Tourist Village to be dredged - which is not within the drainage project's scope of work.
