And while a few brave forestry officers will form part of that expedition, their colleagues at the Elijio Panti national park's Itzamna Society are getting a much-needed donation.

It comes from the German government who've provided equipment needed for the adequate management of the celebrated park.

Minister of Sustainable development Orlando Habet was there for the handing over ceremony and told us why this is a part of larger regional goals.

Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development

"Today was the day that we took out through the forestry department. There is a program called the Selva Maya project which is sponsored by the German government through KFW the German bank and what this project does is assists the Co-managers of the areas within the Selva Maya, which includes the areas within Belize for us but the project includes Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala to form the Selva Maya project and what has been done is that the contribution is basically to assist the co-managers to be able to be mobile, to look and patrol the area that they're managing."

Wilber Sabido, Chief Forest Officer
"And so what you see here on the side is really a very small investment that the project is making and I term it as an investment because as with any investment we would want to see some return on that investment an we do know that the return is the commitment, the increase in the management capacity, having the rangers, the wardens being out there being able to patrol more effectively and being able to report as well. So this is basically again, a small investment that is being made with the expectation that we will have significant returns."

Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development
"Certainly they have to protect the forest, protect the biodiversity of the forest but at the same time be able to see how the communities especially the vulnerable communities and the indigenous communities where they are, to be able to have some type of welfare and sustainability from it so that they can have a livelihood. So it is conservation but at the same time providing a livelihood for the people."

The donation has a value of $65,000BZD and includes a desktop computer, surge protector back-up, smartphones, chainsaws, GPS, and two ATVs.

The department also donated equipment, supplies, and uniforms to the management of other key protected areas, namely the Sarstoon Temash National Park and the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area.
