There is growing social media outrage in San Pedro Town after a resident posted images of a former mangrove area being filled for development.
The post-er Jody Leslie notes "Theres a large area of mangroves that were cleared, then hundreds of trucks dumping land material to fill in what is essentially the sea. It has been going on a while now and only keeps extending further and further out.
Is it legal what they are doing?
Do they have permits and permission to fill that far out etc…"
Well, that's what we asked the Chief Environmental Officer Anthony Mai but at news time, he had not responded.
But, it has touched a nerve in San Pedro where many, simultaneous invasive developments are happening on the island, many of them involving dredging and reclamation of large areas of the sea, and mangrove deforestation.
We'll keep following the story.
