And while the Forestry Department says it is a matter for NEMO, one district community activist and conservationist says someone has to help. We spoke to Maya Ch'oc from Satiim via Zoom:

Maya Ch'oc, Executive Director SATIIM

"They're trying to contain it as much as they can with their buckets and their little pumps as you can see in one of the images that I shared. But I mean, the wind, it's not helping. And so it's just going, it's just going like a wildfire. And right now it's a lot of smoke. The kids are at school. And so my concern is for the children, you know, it's a health hazard to be in school."

"It's hot and to be in a smoky environment. It's not healthy. And wildlife, there's a loss of wildlife as well with animals being found dead, burnt from the fires. So It'd be really good if we can get some assistance from the authorities to help in trying to control the situation, because also farms are being destroyed. Miles, cacao, That's a huge investment to the south."

"And so really and truly I think my call is just really for help in trying to contain this situation."

We'll keep following the fires and have an update for you tomorrow.
