A cabinet brief issued a short while ago notes the recent meeting in Calakmul, Mexico and says, quote, "At this meeting, Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico agreed to establish the Biocultural corridor called the Selva Maya Reserve, a tri national park which is the second largest reserve in the Americas."
Today the Mayas of Southern Belize sent a statement saying they Find Hope in the Calakmul Declaration. They say they wish it quote, "translates to meaningful support for Maya customary stewardship of the forests of Southern Belize, a critical part of the tri-national corridor. "
They call for a change from 'business as usual' conservation to a culturally integrated approach. They note that their lands and forests are under increased human and climate stress.
