In other agricultural news, the Governments of Belize and Mexico have officially launched Phase II of the Sembrando Vidas or "Sowing Lives" project.

The launch ceremony was held in San Narciso, Corozal. Phase II builds on agreements signed on May 7, 2022, during a visit by then Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The project's first phase, launched in June 2023, benefited approximately 2,000 small farmers across Belize. CEO at the Ministry of Agriculture Servilo Baeza spoke on how phase one of the project has benefited the livelihood of small farmers:

Servulo Baeza, CEO - Ministry of Agriculture
"The first phase of the project was launched in June of 2023 benefitting some 2000 small farmers and so today we witnessed the launch of phase 2 of the project with another 2000 Belizean small farmers set to benefit. The Cebrando Vida project goals are goals that reflect flexibility and resilience in Agriculture. Improving the livelihoods of our small farmers by involving them in programs and projects that ensure and promote self reliance in food security, rebuilding of the social network of rural communities and recovery of the environment. This takes place through the planting and growing food, crops and trees which in turn ensure our food security and that we revive our forest. This takes care of two major problems that Belize shares with Central America. Dealing with poverty and degradation of the environment, particularly deforestation."

Foreign service officer, Kevin Berganza, said that the initiative reflects strong bilateral cooperation between Belize and Mexico, particularly in advancing socio-economic development through agriculture.

Kevin Berganza, Foreign Service Officer
"Through the successful implementation of the first phase, we have witnessed first hand how targeted support to small farmers has strengthened rural livelihoods. Financial assistance, capacity building initiatives and the provision of Agricultural inputs have contributed to improve income stability, enhance food production and more secure futures for participating families. Equally important is the project's contribution to national food security by increasing agricultural productivity and promoting crop diversification, Belize has strengthened its capacity to sustainably feed its population while reducing reliance on external sources. In today's increasingly uncertain global environment such resilience is invaluable for small developing states like Belize. The project also continues to champion sustainable agricultural practices, it focuses on agro forestry, soil conservation and climate smart techniques that ensures that we are not only cultivating crops but also safeguarding Belize's natural resources for future generations.
