He's the former mayor of Orange Walk Town, a PUP Mayor at that, and you might think that Reynaldo Ricardo Burgos would be able to get basic medical care in the town he once ruled...but not so. The ex-mayor broke his hand while working at home on Sunday, and up to today at noon, he was still in the hospital and had not gotten the required surgery. He told our affiliates at the Northern Cable Network his dilemma.

Reynaldo Ricardo Burgos,
"When I got here the doctor tended to me and he sowed my hand but then he said that the broken bone is not an emergency and I didn't have to tend to it at that time. But he said that I should be in here taking medication for the cut that I got, it's a big cut. So I've been here since Sunday afternoon and I was told that they would schedule an operation for today, Wednesday. The doctor yesterday told me that I would probably need to talk to somebody in a position for me if I wanted to get an operation because they weren't doing operations because the sterilizing machine is not working and anytime they need it, they go to Belize but the Belize one isn't working so they have to go all the way to Belmopan so only emergency operations they are doing. They said that my broken hand is not an emergency and that they cannot operate on me. The least you should expect is an operation. I don't want to seem presumptuous but I think people know me around here and I don't think its necessary for people to know you, or for you to call somebody, to get an operation. I feel sorry for the poor people that can't afford to go somewhere else. As you can see we are packing up to leave the hospital right now to go to Belize or go somewhere else to get this operation because if I stay here, it looks like I'll be here a month or more before I get operated."

After the long wait, at noon, Burgos transferred himself to Belize City.
