He was installed as the new Catholic Bishop of Belmopan and Belize City in January but tonight Bishop Dorrick Wright is facing a long recovery after he fell seriously ill last week. Former bishop O.P. Martin, who is holding over for Bishop Wright, confirmed to 7NEWS this evening that Bishop Wright underwent a six hour emergency surgical procedure on Thursday.

Bishop O.P. Martin says that after celebrating mass on Wednesday night, Bishop Wright became feint and was rushed to the hospital. A CAT scan revealed bleeding on the right side of bishop Wright's skull. His neurologist recommended immediate surgery and he went into the 6 hour procedure on Thursday.

Bishop Martin says it was successful and that Bishop Wright is recovering and in good spirits at the Pallottine Sisters' nursing facility on Princess Margaret Drive. He is there under doctor's observation but should return to his ministry within the next two weeks.

Bishop Dorrick Wright has suffered from diabetes for the past 6 to 7 years.
