On Wednesday, we told you about our initial reports out of Cayo that over a dozen staff at the San Ignacio Community Hospital had tested posted for COVID-19. Tonight, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is confirming that a cluster of cases has been detected at that medical facility.

A press release from the Ministry of Health does not disclose just how many positive patients have been identified at the hospital, but persistent reports suggest that 19 staff members have tested positive. This evening, a post was made on Facebook from the account, "What's Up In Santa Elena?". In that update, it was alleged that 35 staff members at the hospital tested positive. We attempted to verify the accuracy of that number but the Hospital's Chief of Staff could not confirm or deny that report.

Whatever the total number, in its release, the Ministry says that its surveillance team has strengthened all public health measures, which include isolation of those who are affected, sanitization of the hospital, and COVID testing for all staff members. But, reliable reports tell us that staff - who are asymptotic - were pressed back into work - even after they had tested positive.

The Ministry stresses the public that key services will continue to be offered at the hospital.

Back in December of last year, the San Ignacio Community Hospital had another outbreak, and reports to 7News were that at least 10 staff members tested positive for COVID-19 at that time.
