And we also spoke with KHMH's CEO on these maternal deaths. She too noted that there has been vaccine hesitancy among pregnant women and encourages them to get the jab.
Chandra Cansino, CEO, KHMH
"I do believe most of them were unvaccinated. The ones that I know about. And yes, you're referring to COVID deaths from maternity, right? Yes. Unfortunately, most of them, if not all that I am aware of were unvaccinated."
Courtney Menzies:
"And did many of the children, to your knowledge, survive the ordeal?"
Chandra Cansino, CEO, KHMH
"Yes. From the ones that I am aware of, I think all of the babies. Yes."
"I think it's some hesitancy. I do believe there may still be some physicians that you know, that are advising, you know, wait till this trimester, wait till that trimester, etc. So I think that's an area that perhaps we need to strengthen. I think the ministry is aware of it, and I think they're really pushing now, you know, all pregnant mothers- There was some concern in the beginning if I get it in my first trimester, et cetera, but I think those have been allayed. And so the drive now I believe from the ministry and we would we'd recommend from here is that just get vaccinated."
