We turn now to a topic that's not spoken about often enough on the news, or in private or social settings.
Yesterday, a 22-year-old mother of two was taken to court after she was charged with making a false report. She'd told the police that she had been robbed when nothing of the sort actually occurred. So, why did she do it? Well, the reason she gave the court prompted the judge to order a psychiatric evaluation.
She explained that she had been having overwhelming suicidal thoughts, and that she was also thinking of harming her newborn baby. She knew that she had to get help, and when she was out of options, she went to the station hoping to get detained.
She told her terrifying story to our court reporter yesterday, and to protect her privacy, we have withheld her identity and image. Here is her interview - which will be followed by a conversation with a counsellor about post party depression. First, here's the victim:
Voice of: Kailee Perez, Pleaded Guilty To Making False Report
"It happened like between the time when I had my child and a month after. My emotions were very down, I was depressed and I had instances whereby I didn't want to be here and then for a month it was off and on again and for the last past three weeks now, it is getting worse so the day when I went to do the police report I decided to go there because in my mind I had my mind set on taking my life and my kid's life. I don't know why I class myself as a burden to others but that's how I feel, there's always this lonely feeling like no one wants to help but it's not because they don't want to help, it's because they don't know what's going on and I don't really feel comfortable bringing up every single feeling that I have to everyone that I know. I'm not that open to let them know what's going on inside my mind and I guess holding all that information in was it for me and that was what I was going to do when I got home so instead I just went to the police station and made a report hoping that they would recognize right away that it was a false report and detain me so I could be under supervision until my mind was clear."
"Before I had her, I had my son, and it was very clear with him I didn't have any issues or anything but after I had my second child I believe what triggered it may have been the fact that it was like a 50/50 situation because when I had my second child, it was very complicated, I lost a lot of blood."
