Belize is one step closer to having its territorial dispute heard at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, Netherlands.
Today, the Agents for Belize, Ambassadors Assad Shoman and Alexis Rosado delivered what is known as its "Rejoinder" to the Registrar of the Court. This marks the final stage of written submissions - and, in a sense, marks the end of the first, critical leg of a 4 year journey that started in 2019 with the referendum to go to the ICJ.
But, it's far from finished. What's next? The Court must now set a date for the oral hearings, and, after that, judgement to settle the centuries old dispute.
A government press release says "Belizeans can be assured that a very strong case has been put forward in defence of Belize's sovereignty and territorial integrity."
