Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te was expected to make a visit to Belize between the 10th and 16th August, but tonight his trip to this hemisphere is on pause - and it could be because of an unusual decision from US President Donald Trump. President Lai was scheduled to visit his country's three remaining allies in Central and Latin America, that's Guatemala, Belize ands Paraguay - while making stop overs in the US cities of New York and Dallas.
Well, today the Financial Times reported that President Donald Trump's administration has denied permission for President Law to stop in New York on his way to Latin America. The reason? Ongoing trade talks with China which claims the the democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory.
But, today a presidential spokesperson said Lai has no plans to make an overseas visit in the near future due to ongoing rehabilitation efforts in southern Taiwan following a recent typhoon.
