The North Front Street traffic experiment is over, at least for now. The City Council has restored the two-way flow of traffic on one of the city's busiest streets. Earlier this month the city council restricted the street to one-way traffic between City Hall and the Swing Bridge.
The City Council said it was a test to ease traffic congestion in the downtown area and today councilor in charge of traffic Dean Samuels told us it worked. He said that while the streets is now back to the two-way flow, it won't be that way much longer. That is because the North Front Street area near City Hall will be part of what they are calling a tourism control zone. Whenever that is implemented, Samuels says North Front Street will become one-way permanently.
And with North Front Street now re-opened, Hyde's Lane has been closed off during peak hours for Holy Redeemer students. Samuels say CITCO plans to cover the drains and build railings before re-opening Hyde's Lane full time.
And though the results of the test were good, Samuels today conceded that the public outcry against it played a role in the about turn.
