Every year the Belize City Council is involved on a sporting activity in which it competes with a city of similar size to see who can bring out the most people in that city to participate in some kind of sporting activity for at least 15 minutes. It's called challenge day and this year Belize City is competing against a city in Cuba. It doesn't look good from this undersized municipality's long losing streak, but organizers at City Hall Natalie Waight, Ernest Morris and councilor Phillip Willoughby say city residents can give it their best.

Natalie Waight,
"We've sent out letters to NGOs, businesses, and different places throughout the city, inviting them to come out and support the activity. It's a sports activity to promote the healthy living and healthy lifestyle of the people living in Belize."

Ernest Morris,
"It's a competition where we are competing against a city in Cuba, with the same population as Belize, and we want to see how many people we can bring out so we can do much better this year competing against Cuba."

Phillip Willoughby, City Councilor
"I would like to extend an invitation to the entire city of Belize. Its to eople who would normally go out to the Marion Jones Stadium to exercise in the evenings and in the mornings and those who go to the gym and we extend this even to the churches and anybody else who would like to come out to promote and help the day be a success."

The City Council has sent out application forms for groups to participate. When these are tabulated against Cuba's, we'll know which city won.
