And while this sugar dispute could cause months of discontent - a group of families up north will be celebrating domestic bliss.
They'll be settling across the New River in the relatively new Petville area - made possible now by new water and light connectivity installed today.
The government press office caught up with Prime Minister John Briceno on the new home sight and he told them about this first step in Orange Walk' Town's expansion.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize
"BWSL to be able to bring electricity, sorry, water into this area and we've been in contact with BEL also to be able to do the same for them to be able to expand their service in this area, land in Orange Walk Town, we've run out of land in Orange Walk Town and so to be able to expand the town we have to come across the river to areas where it's high land and it will be easy to access and so we believe that by partnering with BTL and BEL and them coming here and expanding electricity, we believe that then more and more people will be able to move quickly and build their house in this area."
Sean Fuller, General Manager Commercial and Retail services, Belize Electricity LTD. "BEL has a systems expansion program where we are canvassing the entire country to determine what areas we have customers that are unserved and we are expanding our entire network to serve these new customers. Petville is just one of those Periurban communities around Orange Walk and we've already had designs in place and you'll see in two weeks the planting of poles to connect customers that we've already identified that are ready to connect to the grid. So, we're here to look at the other areas where the government has plans to provide additional lots for additional residents of Belize and we're looking at these areas to determine how quickly we can get into them to serve the customers."
The PM also told CTV3 that Petville will be one of the sites targeted by G.O.B.'s low-income housing projects.
