Construction has resumed on the Caye Caulker police station, confirming that whatever deal the government was entertaining to flip the property has been permanently shelved.
But the village council is not resting there. They want the government to transfer the title for parcel 815 into the name of the village council. And they are collecting signatures from residents to trigger a referendum on the future of the current police station property. Today the CEO for Home Affairs did not exactly welcome the initiative:
Elton Bennett, CEO - Ministry of Home Affairs

"I believe that, that is not being discussed at this stage that is national land is land that was given to the, to the government. So for that to be transferred to the to the village council is, it's a very strange request. I don't see the need for a land that is designated to the police, which is a national service, be placed into a municipal bodies such as a village council."

"So what's the plan for the police station then in Caye Caulker?"
Elton Bennett, CEO - Ministry of Home Affairs
"We continue to construct."
Reporter-
"As in immediately it resumes?"
Elton Bennett, CEO - Ministry of Home Affairs
"Yes."
Reporter-
"Was there any discussion with CABEI to your knowledge, to have paused construction to consider building in another location?"
Elton Bennett, CEO - Ministry of Home Affairs
"Yes. There were discussions. There were opportunities presented. The decision makers looked at it, and at the end of the day, the decision makers decided to continue to construct the police station."
